Then as I looked, I saw a door standing open in heaven, and the same voice I had heard before spoke to me like a trumpet blast. The voice said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.”
Revelation 4:1 NLT This is the second time John has had an apocalypse (a revealing). In chapter 1 he had a revealing of Jesus. Now, here in chapter 4, he is transported, in spirit, to heaven. There, he has a divine and transcendent experience. This was beyond, and above, the normal range of physical, human experience. He had just experienced the vision of Jesus and what He had to say to the churches. Now, he is taken to heaven for the next part of the vision. Chronologically, John is giving us a step by step description of his encounter with Jesus. Here, in chapter 4, verse 1, we see two things: 1. A Door opened. 2. A Voice speaking 1. The Door - John is taken into the very throne room of God. Interestingly, the door to heaven was open. In chapter 3, verse 20, the door to the church was closed and Jesus was knocking, requesting entry. Jesus called John to the throne room of heaven by an open door. Jesus is the open Door! He is the only entrance into heaven. Only through Him can we have access into the very presence of God! He calls to us, with an open door, to come into His presence and live. The only way in is Jesus. “So Jesus said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.” John 10:7 NASB “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” John 10:9 NASB The New Living Translation uses the word "gate". The gate is the doorway for the sheep. Only Jesus can grant access to heaven and the throne of God! 2. The Voice - Jesus was calling! The voice of Jesus was like a trumpet blast! This voice was compelling and commanding. John knew the voice. He was being summoned by Jesus into His presence. Just like the door of the church was closed in Revelation 3:20, with Jesus standing outside knocking, it also tells us that He was calling with His voice. Here, in chapter 4, verse 1, Jesus is calling, with His voice, for John to come through His open door into heaven and the throne room. This is exciting!! Jesus has made it possible for the child of God to come into heaven and to approach the throne of grace. “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Hebrews 4:15-16 NLT “Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.” Ephesians 3:12 NLT Jesus voice is certainly commanding and unmistakable. He calls to all who will hear Him. He stands, as the open Door, waiting for us to come to Him! Have you heard His voice? The Door is open!
