You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh. My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind. My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance. Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery. But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak. I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply. For I am waiting for you, O Lord. You must answer for me, O Lord my God. I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.” I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain. But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done. I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason. They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good. Do not abandon me, O Lord. Do not stand at a distance, my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior.” Psalms 38:9-22 NLT
David was in a difficult place in his life. Sin had left him downcast, his body fought with pain, his friends and family didn't want to get too close, and his enemies were taunting and threatening him. Instead of resigning his life to defeat, he made a choice to plug his ears to the enemies rhetoric and give his situation to God! His only help was in God! He confessed his sin to God and trusted Him to deliver him. His only hope of survival was God! You and I would do well to learn this same thing. Regardless of the circumstances of our lives, our only help and our only hope is in God! “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalms 46:1 NLT God is not our enemy. The current state of the fallen world, other people, and even our own selves are the enemy. God is our help! The only hope of survival for us is in the Lord Jesus Christ!!! “So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 6:18-20 NLT Listen to the lyric of an old hymn: "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less" written in 1834 by Pastor Edward Mote Verse 1: "My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly lean on Jesus' name Chorus: On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand Verse 2: When darkness hides His lovely face I rest on His unchanging grace In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil Chorus: On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand Verse 3: His oath, His covenant, His blood Support me in the whelming flood When all around my soul gives way He then is all my hope and stay Chorus: On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand Verse 4: When He shall come with trumpet sound Oh may I then in Him be found Dressed in His righteousness alone Faultless to stand before the throne Chorus: On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand" “Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.” Colossians 1:22 NLT
