“If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.” 1 John 1:8-10 NLT
Each of us are guilty of sin. None of us are excluded from this category. Romans 3:23 tells us that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s holy standard. There is only one alternative to the situation: Jesus Christ!!! He, and He alone, can forgive our sins and cleanse us from our wickedness. There is one requirement: Confession. I’m not talking about confessing to a man. We must confess to God, through Jesus Christ. He is the only mediator (see I Timothy 2:5). When we confess, we are agreeing with the charges. The marvelous and miraculous thing in this case is that, when we confess to God, we are immediately forgiven and the record is wiped clean. This is called “justification”. Justification, by definition, is being “declared righteous”. We could never make ourselves righteous. Only Jesus can make us righteous (see 2 Corinthians 5:21). Aren’t you glad that He has paid the price for your sin and graciously extends forgiveness? Without this, life would be hopeless!!
